Bade Achche Lagte Hain – love scene!! Will the audience accept it!

Last week saw a revolution of sorts on television. They actually showed a love-making scene. The coy blushing couple who for years don’t have any inclination; in spite of being in the living together in the same room, will change forever, I think. And, I am no expert. I avoid these serials like the plague. First all, the complications in Indian television serials just boggle my poor mind! It gets addled with fear at these unknown species of the wicked mother-in-law, scheming relatives and their ilk.

The scene in the serials I normally watch with a Zee Cafe in between, either the guy is involved with someone else; a compromise marriage happens and the Indian hero stays faithful to the memory of his love. Slowly, very slowly it takes years and you would wonder how India takes the world tag of number one populator in the world leaving even China behind! Simple! the actual fact is quite different. Women have no say in the matter and the men need a sleeping bag!

So everything is matter of fact. That’s what you’d think. But, take a look at Indian TV and you’ll know it still is in the Stone Age as far as human emotions are. The m.i.l (mother in law) is on her own trip. Either she is too good or too bad and bad is as bad as bad gets. Torture the d.i.l (daughter in law) or vice versa sometimes and you have the whole country on tenterhooks 6 days a week. Imagine!

Each time a serial started on a light-hearted note I trill. This is for me. Slowly, but surely, the plot manages to take a nasty turn – and everything then goes for a toss. What’s wrong with a good laugh and some fun and laughter? Like the American serial F.R.I.E.N.D.S or Three and a half men with Charlie Sheen; the Indian serial Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai – the ultimate in sophisticated humour in India. Then it vanished with no new seasons. It seems it did not have a good run as the all-knowing TRP’s pronounced and that was that. What about just giving us some good entertainment and forget Trp’s. Greed is evil, I feel like telling producers. Why not watch and wait. You might be surprised.

Then came the Hindi serial Bade achche lagte hain – the title taken from a famous Hindi film song roughly translated as I Like these things a lot (it sounds odd in English – LOL)! It could be ‘these are a few of my favourite things’! And, here the protagonists are in their 40’s and 30+ and they are shyer than 18 year olds (duh!) But, there is some charm in their discovering love. It was kinda cute! There is the evil step mother but she is so cute you just don’t believe she has done all those evil things – but she has it seems (very wicked), you wouldn’t believe how very wicked. Anyways, finally the couple discover love and after a lot of dilly-dallying the path breaking, love-making scene is aired to Indian homes.

Frankly it would be a little awkward with family members awake at 10.45 pm (shh the baby ones), only because it was a long drawn scene. 30 minutes and acting like teens caught in the act. Cho chweet. NOO actually No! The next day there is no after play or stuff just denial from the guy. Gosh, he has this – ‘i must have been crazy to have done this evil thing’ kind of attitude.

Imagine any hot-blooded Punjabi (North Indian male) or any male for that matter behaving like that. Indian movies and serials make a big show about the Punjabi factor. What about the South Indians, East, West – well! They just don’t know PR. Punjabis have ‘Balle Balle’ and other phrases which today is common in most households especially the younger generation. All because of the dozens of Indian films are made by our very romance Director and Producer – Yash Chopra and he has sold the ‘Punjabi’ factor to Indians with panache.

Every Indian relates to these today! Huh! You’re wondering what’s happening. Well! 1.21 billion Indians and 28 states (i hope i got that right), and you have a range of cultural differences as you can count on the abacus! But let’s not digress for it is a topic that has so many layers!
But, I suppose it’s ok if you give credit that things are coming out of the closet – maybe it will teach people how to go about wooing your love. If you can start at 40 then there’s hope for Asians. This scene will now be measured with TRp’s and then they will add more till then other crazy goings on will go on and we will be sated with our lot! But, believe me if the couple behave like they have committed a sin then it’s off for me. I can sleep earlier – all the better for my tired mind!

All I want is light-hearted fun n frolic evening or late night-time pass as we are wont to say!. Are you listening, Ekta Kapoor (a woman business tycoon in films and serials actually in the other order) and all producers who dare not step into funny waters…Take a leap!!

Dear Mr. Shahrukh Khan – an open letter to SRK

I would have called you SRK but those days when I felt that close to you as a fan are finally over! The first time you came on-screen as ‘Baazigar’, I didn’t like it, one bit! Though you gave a brilliant performance, I just didn’t like heroes turning villains with such vengeance. Then, with the movie ‘Darr’ (fear) you were even more scary. Then finally you were transformed by the Chopras in DDLJ as Rahul and ditto in Kuch kuch hota hai, ‘Dil to Paagal hai’! Later you did ‘Anjaam

I have never seen – a more cruel character in Indian films! After the success of Rahul, I think you decided to stay on the safe and hit path and your fans lapped it. I wonder if you know how big a fan base you had. I suppose you do!! I do not have statistics but you know, after all, you own an IPL team!

Dear Shahrukh, do you feel that you have let your fans down with ‘this’ new ‘movie’ of yours! Not that you have not had your share of flops – you did – but it didn’t matter to your fans and everyone does, as Amitabh Bachchan would tell you! In fact, Rishi Kapoor is an even better example – he’s doing roles he wasn’t offered in his salad days! Of course you had Salman, Aamir to contend with in the senior trio; yet you held your own with dimpled charm. Until slowly it became obvious that you could not take no for an answer and like a petulant child, you had to have all the awards. And, stay the centre of attraction always. Each year it became more grating; but who would bell the cat!

My take is not on the disaster movie you have made Ra…g 1 whatever… it makes me sad that you put yourself in our faces till we wanted to scream those bad words your ‘chamak chalo’ did, (poor Kareena)! We wouldn’t since we aren’t that uncouth are we? I can say this without seeing the movie .

YES, I have not seen the movie, because I have been reading reviews to see if there was a ‘hope and a prayer’ that people were wrong; reviewers were wrong! But no, unlike ‘Chak de’(definitely your best), even ‘My name is Khan’ and even a ‘Paheli’ brought this smilethat you wanted to do something different and yes – I have seen these movies even ‘Paheli’! But, I know I just can’t put myself through this one!!

So what went wrong, dear Shahrukh, was it a personal dream to do these Superhero roles in one film?? Fair enough, but why force yourself on the audience with media bashing us with an overdose. I wouldn’t want to point this out, lest you feel crestfallen – but do watch Aamir and even Salman, there is a softness, as if they know the limits(i  believe even Aamir goes overboard but, his cleverness catches you by surprise!!). My heartfelt advice is please – do take a vacation – lack of sleep, late nighters can do this to people. Do come back refreshed. You have not reached the limits of your talent, I’m sure, though, I think you need a break and WE Do TOO!

Maybe then, when you come back we will be ready for an out-of-the box movie but please check the copyrights too! Somehow, I get the feeling, the guy who sued you for copying his concept made maximum profits on Ra.One! Please do take this in good spirits! Wish you bon voyage!

PS I loved ‘chalte chalte’ and ‘hum tumhare hain sanam’ and I feel you play the jealous husband perfectly but no more! Puhleeze! Wish you luck, Don II.

A once upon a time fan!
